Deutscher Titel. Nineteen Eighty-Four. The book shows a world where the people are forced into a single ideology. Look at the vast majority of the media both mainstream and social and admit they are unified in their message.

These people are so rabid they even lust after shutting down any remaining sites or outlets left that don't follow all the right talking points for thought crime.

Critical self evaluation seems all but lost in this country and people are terrified of stepping outside of the boxes that they feel safe in.

Look how easily people seem to conclude that those that don't follow the status quo must be the worst kinds of people that we should be rid of and that deserve any violence visited upon them.

The book spends a lot of time talking about policing language and changing the meaning of things, outlawing certain other words.

Ask yourself who you see doing that right now. Orwell was right. Orwell's vison of a dystopian future captures the essence of the novel with powerhouse acting by Hurt and Burton.

Unsettling as the methods employed to break smith are tried and true tested, employed globally to this day usually in the name of a party or religion.

The novel should be required reading in contemporary high school, but undoubtedly would come under attack from a given pressure group for it's more bleak aspects of human nature.

Deeply disturbing movie as it is so indicative of what is happening currently in this country, and all western countries.

This movie is Scary. Not in the way that a film by John Carpenter or David Cronenberg would scare you. This movie is scary because it seems real, likely to happen, as it has happened.

This film IS a political piece, and its meant to be one. This film goes over the reality of a government that has the collective right to violate your rights as an individual for the greater collective good of the people.

Usually this is done to keep power from changing hands, keep the people ignorant and oppressed so that the Collectivist system can benefit those only at the top.

Ive studied history, governments and economic theory for a while now and this film is spot on with the reality of such a government, even tho the film starts off with the story taking place within the already fascist system, the film contains many subtlety's that show how the leaders and ones in power had gotten their power and how they keep it.

This is not a film that Knocks on Democratic Socialism as its not collectivism, its a democracy and still capitalism, not socialism.

The acting is brilliant, and every actor gives their best in this film. This has to be one of the best performances by John Hurt that I have ever seen.

I read the book a few months ago, and this follows very well. Only some things were left out. It is of my personal opinion that every person should be familiar with this work of George Orwell.

There is not a better warning to the potential dangers of authority and government ever to have been written. My one critique is that this movie is not friendly to those who haven't read the book.

If you have not read the book, you will most likely find yourself confused more than once in watching this. This is a good adaptation of Orwell's novel.

Unfortunately, it doesn't delve nearly as deeply into the issues as the novel, but that's the nature of a two-hour movie, of course. Nevertheless, the story does suffer in places for its brevity.

For example, when Julia passes a note to Winston saying that she loves him, it seems extremely abrupt. It was somewhat abrupt in the novel, too, but there was much more background there.

And at the end of the movie, Winston mentions his wife, which comes completely out of the blue. The novel made clear that he had been married.

Perhaps the biggest way the movie diverges from the book is the ending; in the movie, it is much more ambiguous which I'm actually fine with.

I was between 3 and 4 stars but decided what the heck, this movie was generally pretty well done. See all reviews from the United States.

I saw this many years ago and recently purchased the dvd. Watching it now I think we really have arrived there and I never dreamed that I'd say that for real and out loud.

I was glad to find that this dvd has musical score from two sources- Dominic Muldowney and Eurythmics- it's a nice, creepymix, and Dominic Muldowney's orchestral score is best in moments of conveying the warped nationalism of dystopia, whereas the Eurythmics tracks are mixed in during some eerie, dreamy moments you never get to hear one of their songs all the way through.

The image is nicely washed-out and distorted especially in some interior shots. The sound is good, with dialogue sounding clear though some sound effects tend to be muffled though this seems intentional.

It picks up on a few bits that are missing from the film but arevprobably covered in the book. True it doesn't have the power or impact of the BBC's superb live adaptation with Peter Cushing two years earlier while the horror of Room is definitely something of a damp squib, but it's still a for the most part very effective transposition of a Stalinist police state to a still visibly post-war Britain scarred by bomb damage.

It's also still alarmingly very pertinent, with distant leaders using possibly imaginary wars to justify increasing oppression while revising history - sorry, correcting misreported speech and events - while the approved new dictionary of New Speak puts a spin on the worst outrages in the name of clarification and avoiding misunderstandings.

Many of the finer points of the novel are inevitably lost in the hour-and-a-half running time, particularly the means of subjugating the proles outside the party through pornography and sentimental fiction, while 50s cinemas aversion to showing TVs in ordinary people's houses reduces the televiewers to electronically blinking eyes, losing the beautiful irony of televisions that watch their viewers.

The design of the party buildings is a bit too 50s scifi rather than Orwell's crumbling , but for the most part it keeps enough and gets enough right, from the daily two-minute hate to the role of David Kossof's antique shop owner offering distant memories of the bad old days before the revolution, while the "You are the dead" moment is suitably chilling in its theatricality.

Edmond O'Brien may be a bit too well-fed as Winston Smith but he more than holds his own in an interesting cast.

Jan Sterling is adequate as Julia, Donald Pleasance effectively more or less reprises his role from the TV adaptation while Michael Redgrave's interrogator is the standout performance even if at times the effective interrogation scenes threaten to lean more to the black-and-white anti-communist propaganda of the day than the gradual destruction of self and reality before rebuilding them in the party's preferred image of the novel.

The UK DVD from public domain specialists Orbit Media is, typically, not a good one, but considering the Orwell Estate's deep hatred of the film has kept the film out of circulation for so long it's probably the best we can expect in the foreseeable future.

Load more international reviews. Surprisingly, this movie was "new" to me. The book "" is sinister enough - and good. I must admit that my expectations were not very high - but the movie was really good, following the book to a considerable degree.

Most convincing was the character Winston Smith, with his mixture of ordinary obedient citizen and yet rebel.

The original and, in my opinion, best version of this Orwell classic. Orwell's classic statements regarding "Perpetual War" still ring eerily true today - if not more so.

Shortly after, Winston rents a room above a pawn shop in the less restrictive proletarian area where they continue their liaison.

Julia procures contraband food and clothing on the black market, and for a brief few months they secretly meet and enjoy an idyllic life of relative freedom and contentment together.

Their affair comes to an end one evening, with the sudden raid of the Thought Police; they are both arrested.

It is later revealed that their transgressions were recorded by a hidden telescreen in their room and that the proprietor of the pawn shop Mr.

Charrington is a covert agent of the Thought Police. Winston and Julia are taken away to the Ministry of Love to be detained, questioned and "rehabilitated" separately.

There O'Brien , a high-ranking member of the Inner Party , systematically tortures him. O'Brien instructs Winston about the state's true purpose and schools him in a kind of catechism on the principles of doublethink — the practice of holding two contradictory thoughts in the mind simultaneously.

For his final rehabilitation, Winston is brought to Room , where O'Brien tells him he will be subjected to the "worst thing in the world", designed specifically around Smith's personal phobias.

When confronted with this unbearable horror — which turns out to be a cage filled with wild rats — Winston's psychological resistance finally and irretrievably breaks down, and he hysterically repudiates his allegiance to Julia.

Now completely subjugated and purged of any rebellious thoughts, impulses, or personal attachments, Winston is restored to physical health and released.

While sitting at the chess table, Winston is approached by Julia, who was similarly "rehabilitated". They share a bottle of Victory Gin and impassively exchange a few words about how they have betrayed each other.

They act indifferently towards each other. After she leaves, Winston watches a broadcast of himself on the large telescreen confessing his "crimes" against the state and imploring forgiveness from the populace.

Upon hearing a news report declaring the Oceanian army's utter rout of the enemy Eurasia 's forces in North Africa, Winston looks at the still image of Big Brother that appears on the telescreen, then turns away with tears in his eyes as the words "I love you" are heard whispered in his voice.

Annie Lennox makes a cameo appearance as a woman at the Two Minutes Hate rally. In winter , the director Michael Radford asked his producer to try to obtain the rights to Orwell's novel, with low expectations that they were available.

It turned out that the rights were held by Marvin Rosenblum, a Chicago lawyer who had been trying on his own to get such a film produced. For the role of O'Brien , Paul Scofield was originally contracted to play the part, but had to withdraw after sustaining a broken leg while filming The Shooting Party.

Some internet sources claim that principal photography began on 19 March and ended in October The pawnshop exterior, a pub scene and a scene with a prostitute were filmed in Cheshire Street , in London's East End, an area Orwell had visited and commented on in his first book, Down and Out in Paris and London.

The canteen interiors were filmed in a disused grain mill at Silvertown. In contrast, the idyllic, dreamlike "Golden Country", where Winston and Julia repair for their first tryst and which recurs in Winston's fantasies, was filmed in the southwest county of Wiltshire at a natural circle of hills called "The Roundway", near the town of Devizes.

The scenes on the train were shot on the Kent and East Sussex Railway. The film shared a number of locations with Terry Gilliam 's Brazil , which was filmed the same year.

Radford and cinematographer Roger Deakins originally wanted to shoot the film in black and white, but the financial backers of the production, Virgin Films , opposed this idea.

Instead, Deakins used a film processing technique called bleach bypass originally created by Technicolor and Deluxe, but recreated for this production by Key to create the distinctive washed-out look of the film's colour visuals.

The film is a very rare example of the technique being applied to every release print, rather than the interpositive , that was struck from the original camera negative , or the internegative struck from the interpositive ; as the silver is retained in the print and cannot be reclaimed by the lab, the cost is higher, but the retained silver gives a "depth" to the projected image.

Vincent Canby of The New York Times said the film was "admirable, bleakly beautiful", although "not an easy film to watch". Micheal Radford directs with subtlety around the greasy sets and crumbling locations the picture was filmed in and around the very area in which Orwell set his novel.

The performances from the chief principals are very strong. John Hurt is excellent as Winston, bringing a subtle and considerate approach to the character.

Particularly disturbing is his final scenes, as he becomes gaunt and disfigured through government torture.

Veteran actor Richard Burton lends a cold charisma to government enforcer O'Brien and he too excels in the film's final moments, as he coolly and sadistically tortures Winston, subjecting him to severe physical pain to subdue him, casually pulling a tooth out of his rotting mouth, then exposing him to the horrors of Room , all the while exhorting obedience to the Party and love to Big Brother.

The strong relevance of the concepts of "Nineteen Eighty Four" should not be underestimated. Whilst the term "Big Brother" is now synonymous with the ridiculous "reality" TV shows of the same name, others like the Two Minutes Hate in which the workers are coerced, through a two-minute broadcast, into hating the enemies of the state ; the idea of a government waging a perpetual war to advocate "peace" especially relevant in the aftermath of September 11 as well as the editing of news and the abuse of language in order to suit the needs of government and disguise its true agendas are ideas that are chillingly present in today's society.

All of this is powerful and thought-provoking stuff, and helps to make "Nineteen Eighty Four" an accurate and powerful rendering of a still very timely piece of work.

Fab film. Studied my o levels in and it was almost a cult thing at that time. Shocking how closely some things today reflect his content!

Words escape me in describing how brilliantly this film vividly portrays Orwell's dark disturbing classic.

The two main leads make a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life.
